Debottlenecking Evaluation

Some years ago while working for Shell, Dave Litzen developed a model-based debottlenecking technique that helps organize an efficient approach to incremental plant expansion.  The methodology has been further refined and successfully applied to several corn ethanol facilities, including:

  • Midwest Renewable Energy (Nebraska) - nearly doubling plant capacity with <$1M investment
  • North Country Ethanol (South Dakota) - 30% capacity increase with minimal investment

The fundamentals of the technique are described in Chemical Engineering Progress (CEP), March 1999 issue.
